What is the Hamsa Hand? (Khamsa, Hamesh, Chamsa)

The hamsa is an ancient cultural symbol which represents the Hand of God. In all cultures and religions it is a sign of protection. It brings it's owner happiness, luck, health, and good fortune. You may see the hamsa hand pointing upwards or downwards; both ways bring the owner good luck.
The hamsa hand is known by many names—hamsa, hamsa hand, hamesh, hamesh hand, khamsa, and chamsa. It is also called the Hand of Miriam, named for Moses and Aaron’s sister. There are two main styles of a hamsa hand: the most popular is the stylized hamsa hand with two symmetrical thumbs, but there are also hamsa hands that are not symmetrical and shaped like actual hands.
The hamsa hand has always been associated with a female spirit offering protection from evil and misfortune.
With Kabbalah in fashion, so is the red string bracelet with the tiny hamsa hand and the evil eye, which has brought the hamsa hand symbol back. You can see images of the hamsa hand in recent fashion ads, runways, tattoos, and other popular accessories.
